La Fontana, translated from Italian, simply means The Fountain.
The fountain icon we use on every wine label is inspired by the central town-fountain in our ancestral home of Racalmuto, in the Sicilian province of Agrigento.
To the local inhabitants, the fontana dei nove Cannoli was more than beautiful architecture -- it was life. From the nine 'canals,' or spouts, denizens of Racalmuto could collect their daily water to drink or cook. Horses who worked the fields could be sated. Clothing could be washed. Everything depended on the fountain.
While Old Sicily may be hard to picture in our modern lives, the spirit of purity that the fountain symbolizes is vitally important. We aim to produce wines of character and place. We strive to sustain our production rather than rampantly expand. We honour our natural gifts.
And, of course, through the fountain we remember that wine begins with water.
